Upgrading of ZWS 560: Water for domestic supplies

Water is one of the world’s most essential commodities and most precious. It is a key element of a sustainable feature and a vital ingredient for renewable energy sources, food production and improving sanitation and health. SAZ Standards represent consensus on practical solutions and best practice for sustainable water management. Conformity of domestic water is crucial and as such, it is also part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 for clean water and sanitation.  Water for domestic supplies needs to conform to ZWS 560 standard in order to ensure that the end user is ensured of quality.

In order for water to address the required standards, there is need to lay down the minimum physical, chemical and bacteriological requirements for the purity as delivered to the consumer of water for domestic supplies regardless of source. Government, the industry, regulators, municipalities and consumers can all rely on the standard as a solid base on which issues concerning water for domestic supplies in order to achieve national water management commitments. This then addresses issues of the quality of drinking water, water supply services, sanitation, water quality and use in food production amongst others. Certain standards of quality parameters are required. ZWS 560 lays down the minimum physical, chemical and bacteriological requirements for the purity as delivered to the consumer, of water for domestic supplies regardless of source. Water for domestic supplies includes water for culinary purposes and general household usage, but not necessarily water for hot water systems for which special treatment might be required to prevent scaling and/or corrosion.

ZWS 560 is currently under revision to match SABS 241-1 of the same scope that was published 2015 in South Africa.

The Standards Association of Zimbabwe has a project on hand to revise ZWS 560: Water for Domestic Supplies.

Interested stakeholders are encouraged to use every opportunity availed to them by SAZ and take a leading role to participate in the revision of ZWS 560 Water for Domestic Supplies through a Standards Development Technical Committee.
